P2P

The emergence of the web has made file sharing easy, quick, and convenient, especially through forms like peer-to-peer sharing and file synching services. According to Wikipedia, "File sharing is the practice of distributing or providing access to digital media, such as computer programsmultimedia (audio, images and video), documents or electronic books." P2P File sharing refers to the before mentioned peer-to-peer form of file sharing, which is the distribution of digital media using P2P networking technology. P2P sharing has evolved from its early design stages like Napster, to the more widely known BitTorrent. The widely known adoption of this sharing method includes increasing Internet bandwidth, the widespread digitization of physical media, and the increasing capabilities of residential personal computers. However, file sharing has led to copyright and legal issues. Online piracy refers to illegal, unethical, and unauthorized use of the reproduction of copyrighted or patented material. Piracy has caused many financial losses to businesses and society. An example of an industry taking large hits due to file sharing is the film industry. Writers for the NY Times, Brian Stelter and Brad Stone detail how Warner Brothers' "The Dark Knight" failed miserably after months of ambitious anti-piracy campaign. They stated, "By the end of the year, illegal copies of the Batman movie had been downloaded more than seven million times around the world, according to the media measurement firm BigChampagne, turning it into a visible symbol of Hollywood’s helplessness against the growing problem of online video piracy." This goes to show while industries affected are trying to fight the problem, piracy of all forms is becoming a mainstream behavior.
