Privacy

The rise of new media has presented many advantages and disadvantages. One downside are the issues of privacy and confidentiality. Social media, especially, has allowed people to become "open books". We see it in celebrities, through news pages, or just random people, who are constantly talking and posting on their social media. However, it is important to consider those susceptible to hackers or leaked information. Unfortunately, a bad break up could lead to private information being shared on social media, due to pettiness. Furthermore, hackers looking for exclusive details, could find credit card informations or phone numbers.
"Cat fishing" is a modern way of compromising someone's social media. It consists of almost stealing someone else's identity, like their gender, photos, and other information to fabricate a new online identity. With this, people form relationships with strangers, while claiming to be someone else. The people who's information are being used are often unaware that their information was being used.
Internet security is very important and should be more highly regulated. People need to be careful of the sensitive information they share or message on social media, because it could fall into the hands of the wrong person. It is recommended to not "put it all out there", meaning share what isn't private. Also, take use of the security measures provided by the social media pages. Add personal security questions, or a difficult password, and protect yourself from social media trolls.

  1. I agree with that. With the new internet privacy law, I think that things are going are going to get more complected.

    1. Definitely! I hope we begin to see improvements. Sucks that what we choose to share can be exploited.

    2. We the users have to be smart that is the only way we can protect ourselves online and no matter how annoying it is to change the password every month or two we need to keep the hacker guessing. On top of that if you have short term memories just write down your passwords and keep it in a safe place when you need it.

  2. I agree with your statement. The first step to privacy is our own choice, what we choose to show is what people will see. So, in a way it is all about self-choice. I have many of my passwords written down in a safe place.
